Dr Marlies Craig

Dr Marlies Craig is an epidemiologist with experience in climate change and spatial modelling. She obtained a PhD in Epidemiology from Basel University, after obtaining degrees in biology, entomology and parasitology and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Adult Education, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). She worked for 15 years at the South African Medical Research Council, focussing on malaria diagnosis and the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria in Africa.

More recently Marlies contributed to the reports of the 6th Assessment Cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), working as Science Officer in the Working Group II Technical Support Unit. She has also worked at the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) in the Climate and Health directorate, as Technical Advisor, as Research Mentor at the UKZN School of Clinical Medicine, and as private consultant (epidemiology, data management, statistical analysis and training). Marlies is interested in combining her experience in climate change and epidemiology to help secure a liveable and sustainable future for all. She is also passionate about spreading knowledge and know-how about these complex issues to the youth and general public.
